The round of contacts of Felipe VI with the leaders of the main parties concluded yesterday with the most demoralizing of failures. It could not end otherwise when the only possible candidate despises all the ways of agreement that are open to the left and right to save the Spaniards the fourth general elections in four years. There were precedents for a candidate who declined the King's order, but Rajoy did not have any investiture offer on the table that added up. Pedro Sánchez had two when he appeared before Felipe VI: one that reissued the majority of the motion of censure that made him president and another that Citizens had proposed in exchange for three reasonable measures in defense of constitutionalism and fiscal moderation. But Sánchez has never been interested in sincerely exploring any negotiations because he is convinced that the electoral repetition will benefit and harm his rivals. The institutional and economic cost of prolonging the blockade will be paid by all Spaniards.

During all these months Pedro Sánchez has completed a monumental deception ceremony, for which he has needed the solicitous cooperation of an overwhelming media apparatus. With Moncloa degraded from executive power to story factory, his tenant has shown an unprecedented arrogance that makes us wonder who he hopes to agree with after despising all his possible partners, one behind the other. The arrogance of sanchismo is so blatant that it does not waste time in dissimulation: yesterday, while the political representatives went to Zarzuela, the RTVE of Rosa María Mateo sent letters to the parties to summon them to the electoral debate. But carelessness reaches its climax when we learn that Sanchez will travel to New York over the weekend to give a talk about the weather while letting the most idiotic session of democracy die .

We can certainly criticize the rest of the leaders for moving late or not moving; for making insufficient offers or for not making them. But only to the electoral winner can be attributed the main fault of this failure that renews the exceptionality of Spanish politics, of which he was already the protagonist in 2016. True to his non- Snoist tradition, oblivious to any general interest or sense of state, the executioner of the legislature left the King without options and appeared before the media to continue selling his image as a victim of others. With her he will go to the polls persuaded that a satisfactory number of citizens will applaud his behavior. If this is finally the case, it will be necessary to ask what alternative would be urgent to offer the country. From someone who acts like Sanchez little can be expected, unfortunately.
