"Monju" during decommissioning work Nuclear fuel transfer begins 17:58 on September 17, Fukui

At the Monju fast reactor in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture, work to remove nuclear fuel from the reactor began on the 17th.

Full-scale decommissioning work has begun at the Monju fast reactor developed by Japan Atomic Energy Agency last summer.

And on the 17th, the work to remotely transfer nuclear fuel remaining in the reactor to a temporary storage location called a “storage tank” near the reactor began.

In this work, 100 of the 370 nuclear fuels in the reactor will be transported and will be completed by December.

In the future, nuclear fuel will be transferred in several parts. Finally, by December 2022, all nuclear fuel in the reactor and storage tank will be transferred to a fuel pool where it can be safely stored.

“Monju” began to be developed as a “dream reactor” that produces fuels under the national policy, and started trial operation in 1994. After that, a budget exceeding 1 trillion yen was invested due to a series of troubles, but the operation was limited to a short period, and the country decided to decommission three years ago.

Completion of decommissioning is scheduled for 2048 years.
