The same story is repeated every summer. We free them from the curling of socks and shoes to give free rein to their most feral version, giving them the pleasure of walking barefoot or with those flip flops that the experts advise against and we use so much. And, of course, then come the regrets.

"After the holidays, patients come to our office with two different types of problems: dermatological and osteoarticular, " says Dr. Raúl Ramos Blanco, a specialist in Biomechanics and Foot Surgery in Podoactiva (Olavide, Madrid).

"Direct consequence of the dehydration that produces a greater exposure of the skin to external aggressions, the typical cracks appear in the heels , that usually are accompanied by hardnesses or keratosis around the injury", explains Ramos Blanco.

To eliminate them it is advisable to "go to a specialist who performs the appropriate treatment for these conditions and, subsequently, apply restorers of the acid mantle of the skin with 10% urea, which favor the normalization of the microbial flora that protects the skin against agents external and slows their internal dehydration. "

PAPILOMAS

Another of the great workhorses of this era is the appearance of plantar warts or colloquially known as plantar papillomas , which "are skin infections caused by the human papillomavirus."

How do they get it? "By direct contact with this virus through the imprint left by other people who already suffered from these injuries." In these cases, it is necessary to "go to the podiatrist for elimination, there are several methods for this."

Fungal infections are also very frequent "due to overexposure of the foot without protection to these external agents that invade both our skin and nails." This expert recommends going through the consultation of a podiatrist in search of a correct diagnosis "in the slightest suspicion of itchy skin, peeling, change in nail color, thickening of the nails, etc".

Also very frequent are "injuries due to the inclusion of foreign bodies, be they small crystals, sharp elements or hairs, which can cause very painful lesions over time."

BONES AND MUSCLES

Along with dermatological pathologies, there are numerous complications "derived from osteoarticular conditions , that is, injuries at the level of ligaments, tendons, fascia or bones, caused by the use of typical summer footwear or by walking barefoot."

The mere fact of having walked a lot on the beach, especially on the shore where the terrain presents a large slope, may have become the origin "of a plantar fasciitis or tendinopathies, by a repetitive lesion mechanism where the feet do not support properly" .

Likewise, "tendinopathies due to the abuse of flip flops or sandals that offer little support to the foot are very common, forcing an overuse of the tendons to be able to hold the flip flop and walk at the same time."

Finally, there are usually " traumatic injuries due to blows when wearing the most exposed fingers, the traumatic fractures of the little fingers being very frequent."
