As the suspicions of mistaking Japanese remains in the war dead collection project became clear one after another, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare established a new department to strengthen the system for identifying DNA. This department is also in charge of verifying the remains that are suspected of being mistaken, and will soon announce the verification results.

Regarding the collection of the remains of the war dead, experts who conducted DNA analysis on the remains collected by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's delegation as belonging to the Japanese who were detained in Siberia reported that they were not Japanese. This has been clarified in NHK coverage.

Under these circumstances, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare established a new department, “Appraisal Adjustment Room” on the 10th, in order to strengthen the DNA appraisal system that identifies the identity of remains.

To date, more than 1.28 million remains have been housed in battlefields in Japan and overseas, but the number of people who have been identified by DNA testing has remained at 1,160 since 2003 when the testing started.

For this reason, in the Appraisal Adjustment Room, in addition to examining specific methods for expanding the scope of DNA appraisal, research is conducted on other appraisal methods that lead to the identification of races, and this will lead to identification.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare will announce the verification results soon, in charge of verification work of suspected remains.
