There is a tendency in the current Government to patrimonize feminist demands , as if the struggle for equality between men and women were exclusively patrimony of the left. But with this being a symptom of an intolerant ideological sectarianism -which has resulted in insults to political representatives of the right center committed to the demands of equality-, it is also worrying that the solutions to solve the different gaps between men and women always go through the imposition of fees or for that concept of doubtful effectiveness called positive discrimination. Therefore, it is not surprising that in order to promote female vocations in STEM university degrees (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), the only idea that has occurred to the Government has been to offer free university tuition the first year to the students who decide on one of these careers.

It is not difficult to understand that criticisms of paternalism have reached the Government even from the socialist ranks. And not only because many women may consider it offensive to be offered a favor deal that calls into question their abilities to choose and pursue the career they consider most convenient. In addition, because this proposal is contradictory with another one included in the package that the Government has prepared to negotiate with Podemos, in which the possibility of subsidizing all students, whether male or female, who approves their subjects with the free tuition is studied. , a much more rational initiative because it rewards the efforts of students and their academic merits. It is not logical to think that a person will choose a career for which he has no vocation for the simple fact that the registration is free.

It is precisely the programs that encourage students to choose those careers to which the greatest efforts should be devoted. As experts know, in the early years of adolescence, young people often express their doubts and preferences about the studies they would like to study. Helping them to choose in the least conditioned manner possible is the task, on the one hand, of teachers, who must help eliminate the false prejudices between the so-called men's races and women's races. But also of the parents, who must strive not to repeat the social stereotypes that are in the environment about more appropriate professions or less for women and men.

Currently, only 25% of students enrolled in careers such as Engineering or Architecture are women , a lower percentage even when talking about areas such as Computer Science, where there are only 10% of students. It is obvious that we must end this educational gap and try to match the number of men and women who access scientific careers. The Government is obliged to study more effective formulas than those proposed so far , such as promoting technological applications and scientific start-ups promoted by women. Or facilitate that there are more and better teachers in those disciplines with which students develop greater empathy and complicity and become for them academic and professional references. Search, in short, new ways of walking towards parity without imposing quotas or different forms of discrimination.
