Germans are celebrating 70 years of curry sausage, a German recipe for curry sausage and tomato sauce.

Curry sausages are one of the most outstanding recipes in 1,500 recipes for sausages in Germany, usually served in paper dishes with potato chips.

The annual consumption of sausages exceeds more than 800 million pieces, but curry sausages are the most common in the German capital.

"I think curry sausages have become part of the German cultural heritage," said owner of a snack kiosk, George Beer. "It's a great success story." He added that the key to success was super-quality sausages.

“We add beef to our sausages and deliver fresh orders every day. "Of course we have our homemade hot sauce or curry tomato sauce."

Curry sausages became famous immediately after World War II when food was scarce, and Berliners struggled to rebuild their devastated capital.

"Her idea is heritage and eternal pleasure," read a plaque hanging in the place where Hertha Heifer is believed to have created the brand in West Berlin in 1949.
