Application for decommissioning plan for Kyuden Genkai Nuclear Power Station Unit 2 September 3 35, 20:10 from next year

Kyushu Electric Power Co., Ltd. has submitted a plan to proceed with the decommissioning work over the next 35 years from the next fiscal year for the Genkai Nuclear Power Station Unit 2 in Saga Prefecture, which has been decommissioned.

Kyushu Electric Power has decided to decommission its nuclear power plant for Genkai Nuclear Power Unit No. 2 in Genkai-cho, Saga Prefecture in February because it is difficult to comply with the new regulatory standards after the nuclear accident in Fukushima.

After that, we examined the specific work process of the decommissioning, and compiled a plan to proceed over the next 35 years from the next fiscal year, and applied to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on the 3rd.

The plan divides the decommissioning process into four stages, including the removal of spent nuclear fuel, the dismantling and removal of the reactor, and all work will be completed by the year 36.

As a safety measure during work, we will take measures to prevent radioactive materials from leaking or diffusing to the outside and monitoring radiation.

In addition, regarding the decommissioning of Genkai Nuclear Power Unit No. 1, it was said that the work will be completed by Ornamental Fiscal 2013. However, for the sake of efficiency, an application to extend the work for 11 years was carried out in parallel with the work of Unit 2. Also submitted.

Kyushu Electric Power is estimated to spend 75 billion yen on both Unit 1 and Unit 2 as expenses for decommissioning.

Naoyuki Igawa, Communication Management Group Manager of Kyushu Electric Power Co., Ltd. said, “We want to announce the progress of the work, and work with safety first so that the surrounding environment is not affected.”
