The filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar will receive this Thursday, August 29, the Golden Lion of Honor in recognition of his career in the 76th edition of the Venice Film Festival, at a gala that will take place at 2:00 pm in the Great Hall of the event, according to informed the organization.

After the act of delivery, the film Women will be screened on the verge of a nervous breakdown . The announcement of the award was known last June and the Manchego filmmaker said he felt " very excited " for the recognition of a festival of which he has "very good memories."

As he pointed out, his international debut took place at the Italian festival in 1983 with the tape Between Darkness . "It was the first time one of my films traveled outside Spain, it was my international baptism and a wonderful experience, as was my return with Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown in 1988," said Almodóvar.

Now, the director believes that this Lion will become his "pet", along with the two cats he lives with. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me this award," he added.

The decision to grant the Golden Lion to Almodóvar was taken by the Board of Directors of the Biennale di Venezia, chaired by Paolo Baratta , who supported the proposal of the director of the Festival, Alberto Barbera .

POLYCHATIC, CONTROVERTED AND PROVOCATIVE

Barbera stressed that Almodóvar "is not the largest and most influential Spanish director since Buñuel", but a filmmaker who " has offered the most versatile, controversial and provocative portraits of post-Franco Spain."

"The themes of transgression, desire and identity are the terrain chosen for his films, which permeates corrosive humor and adorns with a visual splendor that confers an unusual glow to aesthetics and pop art to which he explicitly refers", affirmed then.

Among the themes that converge in his films, Barbera referred to "discomfort, anguish of abandonment, contradictions of desire and lacerations of depression", with " peaks of emotional authenticity that redeem any possible formal excess ."

Similarly, he highlighted his "incredibly original female portraits, thanks to an exceptional empathy that allows him to represent his power, emotional wealth and inevitable weaknesses with a rare and touching authenticity."
