Twenty years after the premiere of the first part of The Matrix, which shocked the world with special effects and a powerful philosophical message, it raised almost half a billion dollars and more than a dozen awards on both sides of the ocean, Warner Bros. begins work on the fourth film of the series.

Keanu Reeves is expected to play Neo again, and Carrie-Ann Moss will return to the image of Trinity, Variety reported. The director's chair of the project will be occupied by Lana Wachowski, she will also write the script and remove the tape. Her sister, Lilly Wachowski, previously said that she did not have the opportunity to participate in the filming of a new film - however, she generally spoke positively about a possible continuation.

“We are very pleased to once again immerse ourselves in the Matrix with Lana. She is a person with a rich imagination and an exceptional cinematographer who creates original works. We are happy that she will act as the screenwriter, director and producer of this new chapter of the Matrix universe, ”said Warner Bros. Chairman of the Board of Directors. Toby Emmerich.

The co-authors of the script will be Alexander Hemon (the Wachowski sisters series “The Eighth Sense”) and David Mitchell (author of the novel “Cloud Atlas”, based on which the film of the same name was shot). Grant Hill, executive producer of the second and third parts of the series, will also return to work on The Matrix.

Lana Wachowski believes the decision to continue the Neo story is very timely.

“Many of the ideas about our reality that Lilly and I implemented 20 years ago are now even more relevant. I am very happy to return the heroes (The Matrix. - RT ) to my life and am grateful for the opportunity to work with my brilliant friends again, ”the director said.

The plot of the film has not yet been disclosed, however, speculations have appeared on the network according to which the new tape may turn out to be a prequel to the original trilogy. So, an employee of Variety Justin Kroll in his Twitter said that, according to his sources, is currently being cast for the role of the young Morpheus. This version is also supported by the fact that by the end of the film “The Matrix: Revolution”, the heroes of Reeves and Moss were dead. However, fans of the franchise recall: in the world created by the Wachowski sisters, any plot twists are possible.

Village Roadshow will also take part in the production of the film - under the auspices of this production company, the first three parts were shot. The start of work on the tape is scheduled for 2020.

20 years of the Matrix

The first part of the fantastic trilogy The Matrix was released in the spring of 1999. The action of the tape, then still the Wachowski brothers, takes place in the future, in reality, where intelligent machines enslaved humanity. Computers placed people's consciousness in a skillfully created simulation (the so-called Matrix) - in it people live their lives and do not even suspect that they are in a world of illusions. In reality, machines use the limp bodies of people to feed them. There are those who manage to break out of the Matrix - and one of these rebels is the hacker Neo. He adjoins a group of rebels and begins the fight against artificial intelligence.

The central roles in the film were played by Keanu Reeves, Lawrence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, Carrie-Anne Moss and others. The tape received four Academy Award (for visual effects, sound, sound editing and installation) and two British Academy awards (in the categories of "Best Visual Effects" and "Best Sound"). In addition, MTV called the Matrix the best movie of the year, Neo Keanu Reeves as the best actor, and his fight with the hero Lawrence Fishburne was the best fight.

Several aspects of the film became the hallmark of the film: a soundtrack that provides the effect of stopping the time of the bullet-time technique and even running green symbols - the Matrix code.

Four years later, Wachowski showed the world the second “Matrix” - with the prefix “Reboot”, and a few months later - the picture “The Matrix: Revolution”. The action of these tapes occurs six months after the events described in the first part.

"Revolution" was the logical conclusion of the franchise, but after a while Warner Bros. affirmed the idea of continuing the cycle and began negotiations with its creators. In particular, in the spring of 2019, the director of the John Wick trilogy Chad Stahelsky, who worked as an understudy for Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, let slip that Wachowski was already working on a new film in the series.
