Title: Seventeen . Director: Daniel Sánchez Arévalo. What is it?? It's about the story of a kid and a dog (or vice versa) fighting for something as obvious as loving, recognizing, finding their place. Things, in effect, of age. Origin of the idea: The director saw a story about dog therapy stuck in front of a friend's desk. And, with permission, he appropriated it.

The Beatles conjured up in I saw her standing there to never dance with another one again. And only because she was 17 years old ("You know what I mean," says the song). And Violeta Parra was convinced that "what the feeling may / may not have known". And this because one day he decided to return at 17. After turning a century, yes. Seventeen is the title with which Daniel Sánchez Arévalo returns to the cinema. And he does it after six years, that no 100, dedicated to other matters more or less far from the cinema: to write the novel The island of Alice , to become finalist of the Planet Prize with her and to roll publicity. «I am being born to the cinema», he wrote on the first page of the script of his new work. He did it to encourage himself . And as a declaration of principles. With McCartney and Violeta. «It's not a long time to stop. But you feel a sense of fragility, insecurity and nerves ... 'Will I remember to ride a bike?', He told me. Then, speaking with a friend, also the director Elías León Siminiani, I heard the phrase he wanted. He told me that he was barely five movies and that, in reality, he was being born at the cinema. And I stayed with her. It relaxes me".

The film tells the story of a kid of exactly that age. With all the consequences: he is not yet older, there is still forgiveness for sins . This is a kid played by Biel Montoro and in a hard fight against the universe. Like everyone, but he more. After entering a juvenile center, he soon discovers a soulmate. Someone like him beaten, resentful and eager to return it to a world that either ignores or punishes him . Until one day, right at the doors of what the bureaucracy calls adulthood, everything falls apart. Now more. Your fatigue partner leaves. Theoretically, go to a better place. And this is good. But it is hard to accept that there are better places than where you think you are doing well. And it is not so much selfishness, but also, as a simple instinct for survival . One more detail: it is a bitch. Yes, the inseparable friend is a dog named Sheep at least as hurt as the protagonist. " Even the fierce animal / whispers his sweet trill, " Violeta sings to show what can be called love. And we believe it, of course.

"My purpose was to do something completely different from everything done so far," explains the director of Gordos , Primos or The great Spanish family to drive away misunderstandings. And it continues: «It is a simple and felt film where everything is done for the first time. I have always worked with the same team, because not now. I've always used the same actors, either. I have always built motley plots between comedy, tragedy and with a thousand stories that branched off in so many, well, none of that. This time everything runs with the feet on the ground, very aware of that first moment of truth, without paying much attention to the reflections of fiction ». That is, and in McCartney's words: " Well, my heart went, boom ."

Daniel Sánchez Arévalo (on the left) with the protagonists of 'Seventeen'.

Sánchez Arévalo says that everything started as these things usually do: a little by chance and the same because of some works at home . It is like that. Let's say that the deletion of the gotelé took him as a guest to a friend's house, also the director and screenwriter David Serrano. And there, on his desk of the landlord, he saw every day the same news of 2012 stuck in a cork. The newspaper clipping, that was, spoke of a therapy with dogs for prisoners . "Nothing else I saw, the alarms went off," he says. «What would happen if, instead of adults, the story took place with minors? What if it were on the right border that separates one from the other? The story was growing in Daniel's head until there was nothing left but to take the definitive step of playing a friendship for years: he not only asked for shelter but was willing to keep the idea. «There was no problem. He told me to stay with her if I wanted to, ”he says. They confirm that they keep talking.

And so, little by little, everything else emerged. That is, a road movie in which the protagonist seconded by his older brother (Nacho Sánchez) are launched into the world to look for the dog and, already put, complete one of those trips that end everything. One of the crucial sequences is precisely the moment when both brothers are aware that they have to take the step. The little one is not going back to the center. There is no choice but to flee or, better, to go out in search of whatever has been lost. «In this scene», clarifies Sánchez Arévalo, «there is a third character. It's about grandma. Everything runs in a very small space: in the nursing home where the character of Biel Montoro has taken refuge after escaping. It is there where the viewer has to make the leap with the protagonists . And that is why meticulous planning ».

The script of 'Seventeen', by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo.

Sanchez Arévalo is not in favor of thinking everything and structuring each plane. And less in a movie whose style book forces naturalness , the spontaneous, the living. "What I do," he corrects, "is to dirty the scripts with scribbles a lot. Drawing to explain to the director of photography; I draw the night before filming and I draw to forget what is drawn. In the end, what I love and gives me life is to improvise ».

The film, which will go to the official section of San Sebastián out of competition, advances and along the way in addition to Oveja we will discover another dog: «It's called Rat and it only has three legs», he says and continues: «Something that I think The film's definition is that dogs are not trained dogs for cinema. They are shelter chuchos for which the shoot itself has also been an emotional adventure. His real journey is that of fiction itself ... Now, they live perfectly adopted with their corresponding families ». It is what is called a happy ending.

Violeta Parra says that " love with his carers / the old man makes him a child / and the bad guy only the love / makes him pure and sincere ." At 17, of course.
