Cleveland Hospital Abu Dhabi has identified 5 steps to control a person who coughs and advises patients with coughs to avoid breathing quickly and deep through the mouth after a coughing attack. Rapid breathing can affect the movement of mucus up and out of the lungs, causing involuntary coughing. The patient should drink about 6-8 glasses of fluids daily unless the doctor asks them to reduce them because the cough becomes easy when the mucus is not thick, as well as using the cough control method after taking bronchodilator drugs or when feeling the presence of Mucus (congestion) .)

According to the hospital, chronic lung obstruction may lead to excessive secretion of the mucous material, which results in frequent coughing. Coughing is not always effective in putting excess mucus in the lungs out of the body, and severe or uncontrolled coughing leads to atelectasis of the airways. Coughing in addition to mucus retention, pointing out that an effective or voluntary cough emanates from the depths of the lungs accompanied by the force necessary to sputum and carry mucus through the respiratory pathways without stenosis or constriction, and thus help control cough to save the body energy and provide oxygen.
The hospital has identified 5 steps to follow in order to effectively cough the patient, including:
1 - sit on the chair or on the edge of the bed and put both feet on the floor and then bend a little forward and relax.
Wrap your arms around your abdomen and breathe slowly through your nose as the coughing force comes from moving air.
3- To exhale, the patient bends forward and presses the arms towards the abdomen and coughs two or three times with the mouth open slightly. The cough should be short and sharp.
4. Re-inhale again by breathing slowly and gently through the nose. Mild breathing helps prevent mucus from returning to the airways.
Rest, and repeat steps when necessary.
