A man and a six-year-old girl were missing after a mudflat triggered by a flood in their southwest swept away their car in southwestern Switzerland, police said.

A strong storm and landslide on Sunday flooded the Loznze River, sweeping away two cars, one of them empty and later found broken.

It was not clear whether the 37-year-old was the girl's father. A police spokeswoman could not be reached for comment. Authorities have also blocked roads close to the Alpine town of Chamonas and a railway linking Sierre to the Cran Montana resort due to risks.

Scientists studying climate change say extreme weather events, including floods and heatwaves, are increasing because of global warming.
