Nagasaki Gunkanjima To resume the entrance of tourists Asbestos is not detected August 9, 20:35

Last month, as a result of a detailed investigation of the fiber material detected on Gunkanjima in Nagasaki City, it was found that it was not asbestos, and Nagasaki City decided to resume the entrance of tourists from the 10th.

Nagasaki City is one of the assets of “Meiji Japan Industrial Revolution Heritage” registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site, because Nagasaki City ’s “Gunkanjima” has detected a fiber material that appears to be asbestos in the atmosphere of the tour plaza. Has banned landing since the end of last month.

Later, after a thorough investigation by the city, it was found that this fiber material was not asbestos, most of which was gypsum and sodium chloride.

In addition, as a result of re-investigating the tour plaza on the 3rd of this month, the amount of fiber material in the atmosphere has been greatly reduced, and asbestos was not detected.

Therefore, Nagasaki City decided to resume the entrance of tourists to Gunkanjima from the 10th.

Nagasaki City explained, “When I surveyed last month, it was because the gypsum in the concrete melted and adhered to the surface due to the rain during the rainy season.”

However, because it has also been confirmed that construction materials containing asbestos are used on Gunkanjima, Nagasaki City will increase the frequency of atmospheric asbestos surveys that have been conducted once a year in addition to surveying such building materials. We will proceed with the examination in the direction.
