Doctoral degree holders August 9 at 17:25 on a decreasing trend only in Japan in 7 major countries

According to an analysis of how many major universities have doctoral degrees in seven major countries, Japan has 118 people per million in fiscal 2016, and Japan is on a declining trend. We point out that it may be one of the causes.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Science and Technology and Academic Policy Research Institute analyzed and compared the number of doctoral degrees obtained in universities in seven major countries such as Japan, the UK, and Germany in FY2016.
As a result, the number of doctoral degree holders at Japanese universities is 15,040, and 118 people per million population, both of which have been on a decreasing trend since about 10 years ago.

The number of doctoral degrees per million population outside Japan is 360, the largest in the UK, followed by 356 in Germany, both of which are more than three times as many as Japan.
In Korea, there are 271 people, a large increase of more than double from 131 people in 2000, about 2.3 times that of Japan.

According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan has continued to decline in the seven major countries, indicating that it may be one of the reasons for the decline in Japan's research capabilities.

The Science and Technology / Academic Policy Research Institute says, “Overseas, there is a system for conducting research while getting a salary before acquiring a doctorate, but in Japan there seems to be a small amount of such efforts.” .
