The commander of a fighter jet crashed at the National Death Valley Park in California, died in an accident during training over a region of deep valley that hit seven tourists on the ground, the US Navy said yesterday.

The aircraft, a one-seat F / A-18E Super Hornet, was flying over Rainbow Canyon in the Valley of Death, about 210 kilometers west of Las Vegas, when it landed on Wednesday morning, the navy said.

The fate of the pilot was not immediately confirmed after the crash, but US Navy officials said the next day that his remains had been identified.

Patrick Taylor, spokesman for the National Park, said seven tourists from France, who were standing in the area overlooking the valley, suffered burns and injuries from the crash.

Taylor said he did not know how tourists were injured or how close they were to the scene.
