The Croatian authorities said this morning that a man who killed six people, including his ex-wife, was shot dead inside the family's home in Zagreb and then committed suicide when police tried to arrest him.

Croatian media reported that the victims (three women, two men and a 10-year-old boy) were found late on Tuesday after receiving urgent reports of gunfire. Only a 10-month-old baby was left untouched by the house, police spokesman Marco Racic was quoted as saying by the official RHT news agency.

Authorities were able to locate the suspect, a 36-year-old taxi driver, after a search around the city, but killed himself before the police arrested him, according to a statement issued before dawn on Friday.

The man was believed to have killed his ex-wife's family, according to the same source. Police are still investigating the crime and have not given further details on the victims.

Police said there was no record of a threat of violence in the past and that the killer had a misdemeanor in his criminal journal.
