The Mexican government has launched the Robin Hood program, which will sell luxury vehicles and property reserved for drug traffickers and former politicians convicted of corruption.

The first auction, which took place on Sunday, included 82 luxury and sporty vehicles such as Lamborghini, Porsche, Mercedes Benz and Mustang, most of which are bullet proof, and the proceeds will be allocated to support the country's poorer classes.

According to the Daily Mail, the name of the program follows the English monk Robin Hood, who represents the courageous knight who used to take the rich to give to the poor, almost reflecting the goal of the program.

"The government wants somehow to retrieve the Robin Hood," said auctioneer Ricardo Rodriguez. "To take what criminals have illegally seized and return to the poor either directly or in the form of service projects like schools and hospitals.

A report by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for 2017 estimates Mexico's annual loss of corruption at 5% and 9% of GDP.

Since his election last December as president of Mexico, Andres López Obrador has begun to implement a series of welfare programs for the poor and the elderly and to cut the salaries of senior government officials. He said he would save public money by eliminating corruption and announced plans to set up the Robin Hood Institute last April. .

Last December, Lopez also made a promise during his campaign to sell the 787 Dreamliner presidential jet, which was purchased for more than $ 200 million and used by his predecessor Enrique Pena Nieto since 2016.
