The German Weather Service has issued a severe weather warning in the morning for large parts of eastern Bavaria because of the risk of ice. Particularly affected was the Upper Palatinate, as the police announced.

According to a spokesman, she had at least 110 accidents, 14 of which were easily injured. In Upper Franconia, officials reported more than 25 traffic accidents involving several light injuries. Parts of Lower Bavaria were affected by the black ice.

Until the night on Saturday rain could fall in large quantities and freeze on the streets, said a meteorologist of the German Weather Service. In the mountains, the risk of black ice will last until Saturday morning.

There were many black ice accidents in the Upper Palatinate in the cities of Tirschenreuth and Eschenbach. The inner cities were closed to traffic, said a police spokesman. Frozen rain also led to dangerous road conditions and accidents in the counties of Tirschenreuth, Cham, Amberg-Sulzbach and Schwandorf as well as in the city of Weiden in the Upper Palatinate.

School failures in Tirschenreuth

In Upper Franconia motorists in the district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge as well as the cities of Selb and Marktredwitz had to pay special attention, as a police spokesman reported. Scattering services are in use, the ice on the streets slowly melted away.

In the district of Tirschenreuth, lessons were dropped at all 34 schools, as school director Rudolf Kunz announced. He ordered this for security reasons. The district of Wunsiedel, on the other hand, announced that classes were taking place. Several students would have been on the way, as the ice formed on sidewalks and streets. Parents should decide if they want to send their children to school.
