Two people lost their lives during a fire in a residential building in the center of Cologne. Four residents were rescued on Wednesday evening with smoke poisoning, said a spokesman for the fire department. Further victims can not be ruled out. The staircase of the four-and-a-half-story building in the Südstadt has collapsed completely. The fire brigade was in action with about 100 forces.

Because of the heavy smoke, the fire department called for closing windows and doors in the city center. By the evening air measurements were but "unobtrusive" remained, said the city.
