MADRID (Reuters) - Traffic lights in the center of the Spanish capital Madrid on Monday (21 October) were replaced by sheep's heads, with hundreds of sheep and shepherds driving across the city announcing their right to use ancient migration routes.
Every year since 1994, sheep herdsmen have been walking through the city, an ancient route where sheep have been walking through undeveloped rural areas on their way to graze in the winter pasture in southern Spain.
Sheep farmers pay a nominal fee under the 1418 Convention with the City Council, equivalent to about 50 medieval copper coins for every 1000 sheep passing through Seoul Square and Gran Vía Street.
