Water houses, futuristic islands, marine energies ... what would the famous writer of Nantes dream today? The most avant-garde projects or achievements will be exhibited in June 2019 in Nantes on the occasion of La Mer XXL.

Jules Verne will be at the heart of the exhibition La Mer XXL , from June 29 to July 10, 2019 in Exponantes. How could it be otherwise in the city where it was born and grew? At the heart of the island Feydeau, a real vessel of stone surrounded by the Loire, the writer from Nantes began to imagine a future that is already our present or our past, as the electric submarine, drones, solar sails , the underwater mineral wealth, etc.

With the help of an imaginative scenography created by Philippe Jouillat, the organizers of La Mer XXL (West-France group's sea pole and Exponantes) invite you all to become Jules Verne in your turn, to guess or dream what human genius will achieve with the oceans.

The spectrum is obviously very wide: it goes from houses to build on or under water, especially in areas threatened by the rise of the oceans, futuristic inhabited islands, through the drugs of tomorrow from the molecules of the abyss and the sea. food from the sea and rich in protein, indispensable when ten billion people will soon inhabit our planet. Without forgetting, of course, the energy created by the sea, or innovative to travel at sea respecting the environment, when we know that 70% of what we find in the shelves of our supermarkets or grocery stores pass by the oceans. There are also the boats, drones and submarines of the future. The imagination must be limitless!

Call for projects

The Sea XXL obviously does not start from a blank sheet. The jellyfish-shaped vernal decor will welcome the Fondation Jacques-Rougerie, whose aim is to encourage young architects of the sea to invent a living environment around the oceans, with boldness, futuristic technical innovations and design, respecting the principles of sustainable development. The Jacques-Rougerie Foundation regularly rewards totally unbelievable projects from around the world. Some will be presented at La Mer XXL, as will the fabulous adventure of the Sea Orbiter.

Ifremer, the French research institute for the exploitation of the sea, is also enthusiastic about animating this space. The immense knowledge, globally recognized, of the French establishment will allow, once again, to push far the limits of the imagination and the maritime future. The ENSM (National Maritime School), the University of Nantes, the National School of Architecture, the Central School of Nantes or IMT Atlantic have also planned to integrate the Vernian space.

The will of the organizers of La Mer XXL is however to open this space to all intelligences, public or private, to give free rein to the maritime imagination. All you need to do is go to the website of La Mer XXL (1) and submit your project, which will be retained, or not, by our committee of experts.

Jules Verne will also be present on La Mer XXL with the complicity of the Machines of the island and its beautiful Carousel of the sea worlds, without forgetting the Nantes museum dedicated to the writer ...

The spirit of Captain Nemo , the Nautilus, the Captain of fifteen , Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea or the Lighthouse at the End of the World will reign at the Parc des Expositions in Nantes, just like the immense love that Jules Verne wore at the sea.
