The UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has announced the death of a former Nobel Peace Prize winner at a hospital in Berne, Switzerland, at the age of 80.

Annan served as Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006 and, together with the United Nations, won the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts in the field of human rights and defusing conflicts in the world.

In August 2012 he resigned as an Arab and international envoy to Syria in the midst of escalating conflict and out of control, blaming the "exchange of accusations and reasons" within the Security Council as one of the reasons for his decision to abandon his role as an international mediator in the Syrian crisis.

Annan was opposed to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, as well as his opposition to Iran's nuclear program.
