Do you remember your recent restaurant visit? Where were you? Did it taste well? You can eat out in Germany in tens of thousands of restaurants - according to the Federal Statistical Office, there were around 70,000 "restaurants with conventional service" in Germany in 2016.

If you found your favorite restaurant, you may have noticed restaurants of the same name in other places. The pizzeria "Roma" or the tavern "Zum Ochsen": Is the beer as well chilled there as it is at home? Are the spaghetti as al dente?

We do not want to dissuade you from staying true to your favorite restaurant. But we invite you on a small trip to Germany to see how restaurant names are distributed regionally.

From "Adler" to "Wirt" - click through the Germany maps:

Germany, your restaurant name

There are tens of thousands of restaurants in Germany - and their names are not evenly distributed throughout the republic. Based on the open map project OpenStreetmap regional differences can be shown.

The "Adler" in the name: Baden-Württemberg is particularly well represented here.

"Adria": In the middle of Germany gapes a hole.

"Acropolis": Restaurants with this name are fairly widespread.

Also in the search for a restaurant with "Asia" in the name you have good chances throughout Germany.

If you want to go to "Athens", you have good maps in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The "bear" seems to be at least culinary, especially a southwest German appearance.

Also the "tree" focuses mainly on the southern half of the republic.

Apart from a few regions in northern Germany, the "mountain" is represented everywhere.

It is considered the favorite drink of the Germans: the beer. Restaurants with this name part can be found in many places.

Also that the "brewery" is quite widespread, not surprising. Remarkable is the concentration in the Rhenish.

Everywhere in Germany there are villages - and everywhere there are restaurants with "village" in the name.

Also quite common, but less common than might be expected: the "oak".

It is not surprising that there are many restaurants with "fish" in the name on the North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts. And they are also common along the Rhine.

The "Garden": Greater gaps still exist here.

As with "fish", it is not surprising that restaurants with "harbors" are to be found mainly on the coast and on rivers.

A Baden-Württemberg peculiarity is the accumulation of animals in restaurant names - here the example "deer".

With "Italia" a certain east-west gradient is to be observed.

Are there no "hunters" in northern Germany? At least for the restaurants, the evaluation shows a certain deficit.

To eat in the "basement" go: You can do that pretty well throughout Germany.

The "Klause" seems to be preferred in the middle of Germany as a restaurant name.

Those looking for a "crown" have good chances in southern Germany, especially in Baden-Württemberg.

For a meal in the "pitcher", however, a trip to the northern half of the Republic is indicated.

Like no other term, the "Linde" is represented nationwide in restaurant names.

Another animal that particularly often appears in the name of Baden-Württemberg restaurants: the "lion".

Above all, "Lotus" should be called China restaurants - special emphasis can not be made in their distribution rather.

Represented in Germany very often: the "mill".

A touch of Italy: restaurants called "Napoli".

Once again Baden-Württemberg, once again an animal: the "ox" is represented here more frequently than in the rest of the republic together.

One might have guessed that "Poseidon" would appear a little more often near the sea.

Off is the "post": more in the west and south than in the north and east.

Also a classic: the "Ratskeller".

You may guess three times what the term is. N / A? Sure, to the "Rhine".

Restaurants with "Roma" in their name are rare in the East.

At the "Schänke", on the other hand, there is no way around Germany.

Are there no swans in northern Germany? Nonsense! But it's hard to find a restaurant name with "swan" in the north.

Restaurants, as far as I'm "sea" - they can be found all over Germany.

Who wants to go to the "sun" must go to the south? This idea could come from looking at the map.

Always in the good "room": You will certainly always find something in this rich selection.

"Thai": Many restaurants with this name element can be found in metropolitan areas.

Another all-German classic: the "forest".

A certain connection between wine-growing regions and restaurants with "wine" is difficult to deny on this map.

Anyone who wants to be a "landlord" is in good hands in the south-east of the republic: In Bavaria, there are a particularly large number of restaurants in whose name this term occurs.

For this we evaluated data of the open map project OpenStreetmap (OSM). Similar to Wikipedia, volunteers from around the world gather information for a public map. This is not entitled to absolute correctness - of course, restaurants can be wrongly labeled or classified and sometimes completely missing. Therefore, you can also supplement data in OpenStreetMap or correct errors.

We used OpenStreetmap data from October 23 of the OSM map service provider Geofabrik and filtered for the marker "Restaurant". Therefore, snacks are not represented in the maps shown. The search explicitly referred to name parts. Under the search term "Linde" the restaurant "Zur Linde" is recorded as well as the "Lindenhof".

In Baden-Württemberg it is animal

Although the survey is certainly not comprehensive: The data provide at least a rough picture - and show some interesting, enlightening and sometimes amusing features.

  • In Baden-Wuerttemberg, there is a conspicuous accumulation of animal names: "deer" is very common there, as well as "lion", "ox", "swan" and "eagle". But also the "grape" is particularly strongly represented in the southwest. In Bavaria, for example, "Wirt" is popular.
  • According to the analysis, "Linde", "Forest" and "Village" and "Mill" are relatively evenly distributed in Germany. Fun Fact: The restaurants have more "linden trees" than "trees". And the oh so German "oak" is represented far less strongly than the "lime tree".
  • The "Post" seems to have priorities in Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia, while the "Schänke" is mainly to be found in the region of Rhineland-Palatinate / Hesse and Saxony.
  • If you want to get into the "sun" you have to go to Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg.
  • It is unsurprising that "harbor" restaurants are mainly located in places along the coast or on rivers. Likewise, "Rhein" restaurants can be found mainly along the course of the river - as well as "Hanse" -Lokale almost exclusively in northern Germany.
  • It also seems sensible that in the coastal states restaurants with "mountain" are rather weak in name, at least in regions close to the sea. Conversely, it can not be said that "fish" is only represented in northern Germany - the names are speckled all over Germany.
  • Anyone who longs for the god of the sea, "Poseidon", should go to the landlocked states of Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg - where such establishments are particularly frequent.

In two terms, a considerable north-south divide was striking: Who wants to eat in the "crown" must look long in northern Germany - in the south, however, there should be no problem to find one. In northern Germany, on the other hand, it is not too far to the next "jug" - in contrast to southern Germany.
