The police in New York have recalled nearly 3000 so-called bodycams after such a device exploded. On a nocturnal patrol, the body camera of an official began to smoke, it said in a message.

The policeman had the camera filed, whereupon it exploded, said the authority. The incident has shown that the battery in the model LE-5 of the manufacturer Vievu "could possibly ignite".

Pilot projects in Germany

Policemen with the model were asked to remove the Bodycams immediately and return them to their offices. According to "New York Times" 2990 devices are affected. In total, more than 15,000 Vievu models are in use in New York. Earlier this year, the police said that by the end of the year, all 18,000 uniformed police officers were to carry body cameras on patrol.

In Germany, Hesse was the first state in which Bodycams were tested in 2013. Since then there have been pilot projects in several states. Also at the federal level, the use is now allowed.
