Investigators are looking into whether there is any criminal reason behind the crash of Chancellor Angela Merkel's plane to the G20 summit in Argentina, the German newspaper Rheinsche Post reported today.

Merkel was on her way from Germany to the summit when the Airbus A340 plane was forced to land at Cologne-Bonn airport late on Thursday.

Merkel called the incident a "serious failure".
She and Finance Minister Olaf Schultz are due to resume their flights to Buenos Aires on Friday but will arrive after the G20 leaders begin their discussions.

The newspaper said security sources said the government was investigating whether the incident was of a criminal nature, although the sources added that investigators are usually looking in all directions after any such incident.
