A man armed with a knife hijacked a bus on Tuesday afternoon in the city of Longyan in southeastern China. Then the abductor drove me specifically to the bus in a pedestrian group.

The attacker killed a total of at least five people and injured 21 others before he could be overwhelmed. Among the dead is a police officer. The police arrested a suspect. The facts are so far unclear.

The city of Longyan has more than 2.5 million inhabitants. The place is located about 300 kilometers northeast of Hong Kong in the southeast of the People's Republic of China.

In recent years, attacks on bus drivers are mounting. In the first ten months of this year alone, local media counted at least 20 assaults, some with dramatic consequences. Only in November, a woman attacked a bus driver while driving in Chongqing Province. The bus then headed into the Yangtze, 15 people drowned in the river.
