A 28-year-old Turkish woman, Nurkan Sarkis, claimed to have killed her husband in self-defense after he was jealous when they bought a watermelon and the seller complimented her, praising her good choice and being expert in selecting the melon.

The wife explained that when she was shopping with her husband, Genghis Aydin, in a vegetable market in Kebiz province, and agreed to sell a watermelon to choose the same fruit, her husband was unhappy with her choice. She added that the seller had told her that she had made a good choice, which made her jealousy and anger, and when they returned home broke up a fight evolved to hit.

"I rushed to the kitchen and took a knife to defend myself, and my husband stabbed him and I hit him from the back," he said. "Suddenly I found him screaming and saying, 'What did you do?' I thought he was joking before he fell down with his blood." Sars, a mother of two, faces up to 24 years in jail if convicted of murder.
