The average social housing renter is 50 years old, with a lower median income than the rest of the population. INSEE details in a study released Wednesday, October 24, based on data from 2016, the characteristics of the occupants of social housing in France.

In 2016, in France, 10.7 million people are tenants of social housing. The social housing stock includes 4.5 million dwellings, or 16% of the total occupied housing stock. Social housing is relatively more present in large urban units of over 200,000 inhabitants, which account for 57% of the social housing stock.

The average age of the tenants of the social housing is 50 years old. It is between the tenants of the free sector and that of the owner-occupiers. The median standard of living of the occupants of the social housing stands at € 15,100.00, which is lower than the median standard of living of the rest of the population.

The poverty rate is higher among tenants of the social housing stock than for the other categories of occupants: it reaches 35%, compared to 23% for tenants in the free sector and 7% for homeowners.

Responding more often to the criteria for allocating social housing, single-parent families and natives living abroad are very active in social housing.
