The skippers

Record edition for this 11th edition of the Route du Rhum, with 123 committed skippers. Among them, big names in offshore racing, former winners of major events such as the Route du Rhum, the Vendée Globe, the Solitaire du Figaro, or recordman solo or crew world tour or crossing the Atlantic . We find mainly in Ultime and Imoca. Among them are Thomas Coville, Sébastien Josse, Armel Le Cléac'h, François Gabart, Francis Joyon, Jérémie Beyou, Vincent Riou and Yann Eliès. Some other iconic skippers are also involved in the other categories, like Nicolas Troussel, Lalou Roucayrol, Sidney Gavignet, Bertrand de Broc, Nicolas Troussel ... As for Loïck Peyron, the winner of the previous edition, he chose this year to run the old-fashioned transatlantic, on a boat identical to that had won the first edition in 1978.

The different boats

The 123 boats are divided into six classes. It is in the Ultimate class that you have to look for the winner of the 11th edition of the Route du Rhum. It is in this class that we find the six maxi-multihulls of the Route du Rhum, whose "flying" boats: Macif, Banque Populaire and Edmond de Rothschild. The Multi50s are also six in number, all 50-foot multihulls. The third category of multihulls is the Multi Rum: 21 boats, quite different from each other, including the three A Capella boats, reminiscent of Mike Birch's victory in the first Route du Rhum in 1978.

The other three categories concern monohulls. The first of them brings together the famous IMOCA, those who participate in the Vendée Globe, the great race around the world and alone. Another category is the Class40, which is often considered by offshore riders as the 60-foot antechamber. Finally, the last category, that of Rum Mono which, like multi rum, brings together all other monohulls.
