A German expert warned of the health damage that headphones can cause during their use in noisy cities.

"When you use headphones at home, you start listening to a sound that is not harmful to the ear, but when you go out into the street, you increase the sound level to cover the noise around it," said Michael Deage, a spokesman for the German Professional Federation of Otolaryngologists.

On the occasion of the International Day for the Suppression of Noise on Wednesday, Dege explained that "this may cause long-term irreversible hearing damage."

The World Day Against Noise aims to raise awareness of the causes of noise and its effects on improving the quality of life.
