ash cloud from the Shiveluch volcano has risen about 15 kilometers above sea level. The ash has been scattered by the wind over large areas.

The Kamchatka Peninsula lies along the volcanically active "ring of fire" that surrounds the Pacific Ocean. On the sparsely populated peninsula there are about 60 volcanoes. The most active volcano in Russia and the northernmost volcano on the peninsula is ShiveLuch. A few days ago, there was an eruption in the Bezymyanny volcano, a little further south.
