The Federation Council approved the law denouncing the agreement with the UK on fisheries. The 1956 agreement allowed sailors from Great Britain to fish in the Russian zone of the Barents Sea.

State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin expressed the opinion that Russia’s denunciation of the agreement “will return to the country the fish” that the “unscrupulous British” previously ate. “Annulment of. the agreement will allow us to accomplish at least three tasks: it will eliminate the possibility of mining aquatic. biological resources of an unfriendly country in our territorial waters, deprive this country of the possibility. of covert reconnaissance,” the document says.
