The government decided at a cabinet meeting on the 9th to amend the Act on Supporting the Independence of People in Need. The revised bill takes into consideration the increasing number of elderly people living alone who are in difficult economic situations.

The plan includes providing a lump-sum grant to those who find employment after graduating from high school, in the same way as if they went on to higher education. The government plans to submit an amendment bill to the current Diet session and aim for its early enactment.
