Kara-Murza was sentenced to 25 years in prison for treason. He was found guilty of violating the Magnitsky Act, which sanctions Russia for human rights violations.

He is the second person in two years to be sentenced for the same crime. The other was a British man who was convicted of spying for the U.S. in the 1990s. The third person was a Russian woman, who was also convicted of treason for her role in a cover-up of the crime. She was released on bail in 2010.
