Thousands of Alexei Navalny's supporters defied the expected reprisals. At the cemetery in Moscow they said goodbye to the Kremlin critic and shouted slogans against Putin.

SPIEGEL correspondent Christina Lever was there. "They don't want to remain silent", one participant said of Navalny supporters at his funeral. "When there are so many people here - it's okay. It's not so scary when we're together," another said. "We haven't seen such crowds in Moscow for years," said SPIEGel's Christina Hebel.
