On January 22, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, celebrated the opening of the temple. The Babri Mosque, which dates back to the 16th century AD during the Mughal era, was demolished in the 1990s by extremist Hindu groups claiming that Ayodhya is the birthplace of God Ram.
