On January 22, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, celebrated the opening of the temple, which was described as the largest in the history of India in terms of area and number of worshippers, after the Babri Mosque, which dates back to the 16th century AD during the Mughal era, was demolished in the 1990s. By extremist Hindu groups claiming that Ayodhya is the birthplace of God Ram.

Leaders of the Congress Party, India's largest opposition party, refused to attend the temple's opening ceremony, and in the days following the ceremony, the Indian government moved to demolish other Islamic heritage sites dating back centuries. Incidents have been reported across India where armed Hindu nationalist mobs vandalized Muslim-owned property.

The opening of the temple was a fulfillment of an electoral promise by Modi and his right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party to win a third term in power in national elections held this year, in clear disregard for the blood of Muslims and their rights, and in a move that was condemned by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and human rights organizations at the time.

The Muslim population in India is 172 million people, making up 14.2% of the population (according to official statistics for 2011).

The visit of the international Indian actress renewed the anger of Muslims and human rights activists across the platforms, especially since Priyanka presents herself as a goodwill ambassador and human rights activist while ignoring the feelings and blood of Muslims.

While Indian activist, Kumari, described the couple as accomplices to the extermination of Muslims in India, “Shame on them, anyone who visits this site provides cover for the slaughter of Muslims, the destruction of Babri Mosque and the ongoing march of genocide in the Indian state.”

Statements of singing in the mosque

In a previous interview by Priyanka Chopra with American media personality Oprah Winfrey in 2021, the Indian actress raised controversy about religions in India, and said that she had been influenced by different religions throughout her life, from Christianity to Islam to Hinduism.
