Russian President Vladimir Putin marked the 70th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with a speech in Moscow. Security measures were put in place, including a ban on women carrying perfume in their handbags.

Putin said that Russia would continue to protect the people of Ukraine, who he said had been used as a "bargain" by the West. The Russian military said it was focusing on the fight against the pro-Ukrainian rebels in the east of the country, rather than celebrating Victory Day.
