Over 100 million people have directly benefited from the central route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project in the past 10 years. The Chang Canal stretches thousands of miles northward, nourishing 26 large and medium-sized cities in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and Henan along the route.

In late September 2023, the Danjiangkou Reservoir started to store water in advance for the end of the flood season. But the successive autumn rains caused the Han River's No. 1 and No. 2 floods of 2023 to occur.
