Akira Ogawa, an independent newcomer supported by members of the opposition parties including the Constitutional Democratic Party, won his first election. He defeated incumbent Ryu Yamamoto, who was recommended by the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito.

Mr. Ogawa said in interviews with media outlets, ``So many people voted for me, and I feel a renewed sense of responsibility. I want to work with everyone to get off to a solid start.'' He commented on how he should deal with the city council, saying, ``It was said that we have a lot of similarities in terms of policy, so I would like to quarrel with theCity Council.''
