Salman Rushdie appeared at a PEN America gala in New York on Thursday. He was attacked in August by a man he believed to be an Iranian spy.

Rushdie has been in a wheelchair since the attack and has lost the use of one of his hands. He said: "If it weren't for these people, I certainly wouldn't be here today. I owe them my life. Violence must not deter us. The struggle for freedom of expression must continue" He was awarded an award for his work in the field of literature.
