This year's Princess of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research went to three American biologists. The winners are the Americans Jeffrey I.

Gordon, Peter Greenberg and Bonnie Lynn Bassler. Gordon is internationally known for demonstrating the importance of the gut microbiome, and how gut microbes play a critical role in diseases such as obesity or diabetes. The jury justifies the award in its minutes "for his contributions to new approaches that recognize the indispensable role of communities of microorganisms in life on Earth, including that of human beings"
