Study shows impact of limiting oxygen availability in mammals. In laboratory mice oxygen restriction is also associated with longer life expectancy.

Findings may have implications for the development of therapies targeting age-related diseases. For example, living at high altitude or in mountainous areas could extend life expectancy in humans. However, more epidemiological studies would be needed to verify this hypothesis, scientists say. The results are difficult to extrapolate to humans, because of the obvious differences between mice and humans, says researcher Cayetano von Kobbe, from the CSIC.
