John Sinclair, who fought in the White Panther Army, has died at the age of 82. He managed one of the first punk bands in the USA, MC5, and was sung about by John Lennon.

He moved between pop and politics, between hedonism and subversion, between marijuana and machine guns. Sinclair was an icon of the left-wing counter-movement of the 1960s and 1970s, writes Andrew Keen. He has toured with his band The Blues Scholars throughout the last few years.
