Walkers found human remains in the Ems-Vechte Canal near Nordhorn on Saturday afternoon. Apparently they were packed in several plastic bags.
According to initial findings, it is a male person. A murder squad has been set up, but the investigation has only just begun, said a police spokeswoman. The onset of darkness on Saturday evening made work around the site in the Grafschaft Bentheim district more difficult and the search was not yet complete on Sunday morning. An autopsy of the body parts has been ordered, but results are not expected for Sunday.
