Mark Knopfler is auctioning off a collection of around 120 guitars and amplifiers for a good cause. Two of the instruments alone sold for more than one million euros.

The showpiece of his guitar collection, a Gibson Les Paul Standard from 1959, fetched 813,000 euros. A quarter of the auction proceeds will go to charities such as the British Red Cross. "I've spent a lot of time with these guitars, but they need a good home," the 74-year-old musician said.
