The Leipzig Zoo wanted to get rid of a zebra. Because there was no room, the stallion was finally slaughtered – and fed to lions.
The zoo rejects the public outrage about this. The stallion had a good life in the zoo – unlike many other animals from large breeds. Feeding it makes sense and is the right thing to do – if only because the meat is of good quality, says veterinarian Jörg Junhold. "I can understand the excitement or the interest – in a way, the emotions," he says.
