Digital images should be sufficient for passports and ID cards. From May next year, passports and identity cards should also be able to be delivered by post if someone is registered in Germany.
If you want, you can have a reminder sent to you by email before an ID document expires. The changes will make handling passport and ID matters “easier and more digital,” says Interior Minister Nancy Faeser. The reform still has to be approved by the Federal Council and is expected to be implemented by the end of 2025.
