Frans de Waal, the great primatologist who brought monkeys and humans together, dies. He won the Nobel Prize in 2012 with his partner Jennifer Pokorny for discovering that chimpanzees can identify other chimpanzees individually by seeing photographs of their butts.

De Waal rose to fame in the 1980s with his book Chimpanzee Politics (1982). This book was based on his observations of the struggle for power in the chimpanzee colony at Burgers Zoo in Arnhem. The book offered a radically new vision of ape leadership: it is not brute force and the direct application of power.
