Did the Turkish voter really withdraw his confidence from Erdogan?. The Republican People not only retained the municipalities of Ankara and Istanbul, but also significantly widened the gap between them over the AKP.
In numbers, the municipalities headed by the Justice and Development Party declined from 39 major cities and governorates in 2019 to only 24 in 2024. The loss can be viewed as an additional step in the decline of the Justice & Development Party in elections, especially legislative ones, in the last decade. Some saw that the result expresses the desire of the Turkish people for a new political leadership and that it is a transformation in the political scene.
